EXIT STRATEGY WORKSHOP

Overview

All organisations face the challenge of closing projects and programs and withdrawing from countries and partnerships. This might be driven by strategic decisions to reduce support, changing country or organisational priorities, or donor funding cuts.

Whatever the reason, exiting from a project, program, country, or partnership is no easy task for anyone involved.

But, before phasing out programs and projects, it is critical to develop a sustainable Exit Strategy to facilitate a responsible withdrawal. The purpose is to plan for and achieve intervention sustainability after program end and to deliver to stakeholders the expected and potentially on-going results.

Facilitators

Experienced Development practitioners with vocational training qualifications:

  1. Cory Steinhauer (BCom, MSSc), Humanitarian Institute and University of Sydney, contributes his social development expertise and prepares participants for programming and organisational realities. Over the years Cory has advised the United Nations, Governments, the private, and social sectors in Afghanistan, Australia, Cambodia, Korea, Laos, New Zealand, Mexico, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Somalia, South Sudan, Syria, Timor, Turkey and Vietnam.

  2. Weh Yeoh, WhyDev and OIC Cambodia, brings his strengths in strategic leadership, management, leading change, service design, development programming, and stakeholder management from across Asia Pacific. Most recently Weh facilitated OIC’ s 2030 Exit Strategy i.e. 100 speech therapists employed by the Cambodian Government, and successfully completed his personal Exit Strategy in 2017.

This workshop addresses questions around the importance of Exit Strategies - sustainability is a key theme evoked throughout. Participants are encouraged to think of an Exit Strategy as a Sustainability Plan, which has inherent benefits irrespective of timing and context.

Exit Strategies are part of good program planning and thus their basic premise (promoting sustainable outcomes) and components should not be foreign. With a bit of practice, over time they can be mainstreamed into all aspects of programming from assessment, planning and design to implementation, monitoring and evaluation. This workshop will encourage and promote that process among practitioners, as well as among external stakeholders and partners.
